We Built a Free AI SEO Audit Tool. Here Is What We Learned Scanning Hundreds of Sites.
Most SEO audit tools work by fetching your HTML and parsing it like a text file. That sounds reasonable until you remember that modern websites are not static HTML anymore. They are JavaScript applications. React, Next.js, Vue, Angular. The HTML that arrives in the initial response is often a skeleton. The real content loads after JavaScript executes.
This means that a huge number of SEO tools are auditing a blank page and telling you that you have no H1 tag, no meta description, and 12 words of content. That is not an audit. That is a misunderstanding of how the web works in 2026.
We decided to build something better.
Why We Built This
At Axion Deep Digital, we build websites for businesses. Every client engagement starts with the same question: where does your current site stand? We needed a tool that could give us an honest, thorough answer in under a minute.
The existing options fell into two camps. Free tools that barely scratched the surface, running maybe five or six checks against raw HTML. And enterprise platforms charging $100 or more per month that were overkill for a quick site assessment.
We wanted something in between. A tool that was genuinely thorough, powered by real browser rendering, enhanced with AI analysis, and completely free for anyone to use.
How It Actually Works
The tool runs on AWS Lambda with a headless Chromium browser. When you submit a URL, here is what happens behind the scenes.
First, Puppeteer launches a real browser instance and navigates to your page. It waits for JavaScript to finish executing, for network requests to settle, and for the DOM to stabilize. This is the same rendering process that Googlebot uses. If your content only appears after JavaScript runs, our tool still sees it.
Once the page is fully rendered, we extract everything. Title tags, meta descriptions, heading hierarchy, image alt attributes, link structure, Open Graph tags, Twitter cards, JSON LD structured data, word count, reading level, DOM complexity, and inline style usage. All of this comes from the rendered page, not the raw HTML source.
In parallel, we run external checks. We fetch your robots.txt and sitemap.xml. We query the Mozilla Observatory for security header analysis. We send your URL to the W3C validator for HTML compliance. We check your redirect chain to see if requests are bouncing through unnecessary hops before reaching your actual page.
Then we analyze keyword density. We tokenize your visible text content, filter out stop words, and calculate frequency distributions for single words, two word phrases, and three word phrases. We check whether your top keywords actually appear in the places that matter: your title tag, H1, meta description, and URL path.
All of this data gets packaged up and sent to an AI model that synthesizes everything into a prioritized action plan. Not generic advice like "improve your meta tags." Specific, numbered recommendations ranked by revenue impact, referencing your actual scores and your actual content.
Finally, we generate a branded PDF report with score circles, category breakdowns, keyword tables, and the full AI analysis. The PDF gets uploaded to S3 with a temporary download link that expires after an hour.
The entire process takes about 15 to 30 seconds depending on how fast your site loads.
What Surprised Us
After scanning hundreds of sites during development and testing, a few patterns kept showing up that we did not expect.
Most small business sites have zero structured data. Not weak structured data. Not incomplete structured data. Literally nothing. No JSON LD, no microdata, no schema markup of any kind. This is one of the easiest wins in SEO. A LocalBusiness schema takes ten minutes to add and immediately makes your site eligible for rich results in Google.
Security headers are almost universally missing. This one caught us off guard. We expected most sites to at least have HSTS and basic content security policies. The reality is that the vast majority of small business websites serve no security headers at all. No HSTS, no CSP, no X Content Type Options, no referrer policy. Google has confirmed that HTTPS is a ranking factor, and security headers are part of that picture.
Image optimization is still terrible. Missing alt text is the obvious problem, but the bigger issue is missing width and height attributes. Without explicit dimensions, browsers cannot reserve space for images before they load. This causes layout shift, which directly hurts your Core Web Vitals CLS score. CLS is a ranking factor.
Keyword placement is accidental, not strategic. Most sites have reasonable content, but their top keywords do not appear in all three critical locations: title tag, H1, and meta description. Usually the keyword is in the body text but missing from at least one of these high value positions. It is not that site owners are ignoring SEO. They just do not know which placements carry the most weight.
The Technical Decisions
Building this taught us a few things about serverless architecture for compute heavy workloads.
We run on a 2GB Lambda function with a 90 second timeout. Puppeteer with Chromium needs at least 1.5GB to run reliably, and the combination of page rendering, external API calls, and PDF generation needs the extra headroom. The sparticuz/chromium package gives us a Lambda compatible Chromium binary that stays under the deployment size limits.
Rate limiting uses DynamoDB with a composite key of IP address and date. Each IP gets three free audits per day. The table uses DynamoDB TTL to automatically clean up old entries after 48 hours, so we never have to worry about storage growth.
PDF reports go to an S3 bucket with a lifecycle rule that deletes everything after one day. Reports are ephemeral by design. If you want to keep yours, download it. This keeps our storage costs effectively zero.
We chose DeepSeek for the AI analysis because it offers strong reasoning at a fraction of the cost of larger models. For a free tool that needs to handle volume without burning through API credits, the price per token matters. The quality of the recommendations has been consistently good, especially for the structured data we feed it.
What People Actually Do With the Results
The reports break down into three audiences.
Business owners use them to understand where their site stands without needing to interpret technical jargon. The AI summary speaks in plain language about revenue impact and specific next steps.
